Alex Hoang

Product Design Engineer

I spend most of my time turning messy problems into real physical products — medical devices, consumer hardware, defence equipment, and the tooling that makes them possible. I care about how things are made, not just how they look.

Focus areas

  • Medical devices — Class I & II, FDA pathways, biocompatibility
  • Consumer products — DFM, injection moulding, electronics integration
  • Defence & industrial — ruggedisation, compliance, reliability

How I work

A few things I've learned to value after shipping products across medtech, consumer hardware, and defence.

Start physical early

I prototype as soon as possible — foam, 3D prints, soft tooling — because CAD only tells part of the story.

Design for the factory

I spend a lot of time thinking about draft angles, tolerances, and how a part will be moulded, machined, or assembled.

Validate with numbers

FEA and tolerance stacks help me sleep at night, but I always try to back them up with real testing.

Regulatory as a design tool

ISO 14971, FDA design controls, and IEC 60601 aren't checkboxes — they shape how safe products get built.

Talk to suppliers often

Some of my best design feedback has come from mould shops and machinists who know what actually works.

Write it down

Good documentation is how a design survives hand-off. I try to leave things clearer than I found them.

Selected work

A few projects I've been lucky to work on across medtech, consumer hardware, and industrial systems.

Class II MOSkin Radiation Measurement System
Medical device

Class II MOSkin Radiation Measurement System

Managed the full V&V program of an FDA-approved battery-powered radiation dosimetry device. Identified & resolved critical mechanical issues including springs, cyclic loads, and bending stress using a data driven approach. Managed design controls, biocompatibility selection, and supported 510(k) documentation.

Class II Inspiring Universal Spacer System
Medical device

Class II Inspiring Universal Spacer System

Developed plastic injection-moulded components for a Class II respiratory spacer system compatible with universal jet and spray nebulisers to achieve ISO and IEC standards. Focused on reliability, biocompatibility, and user comfort.
